New layout.

As you probably noticed. Begone, vile orange, replaced with bone white. (Though I kinda wanna redraw that skull. Maybe make it look, I dunno, more human?)

Anyway. I like it better. If you think otherwise, let me know. Readability is important for a text-heavy site.

Chapter One

I’ve spent a lot of time, lately, feeling sorry for other people.

I’m not sure why. I never used to care so much. You wouldn’t blame me if you were in my position, either: I work the IT desk at a college. I have to deal with whiny assholes all the time, seldom receiving any thanks or praise for my work. As part of the customer service industry, I’ve learned to tune out the feelings of others and focus on the job.

But now… now I can’t help but care. My heart is bursting with emotion for everyone. What the hell happened?

It all started on Tuesday. Some preachy Philosophy student had dropped his laptop on my support desk, demanding I fix the thing. Nothing new, that – I have to coax dozens of laptops back to life every day. Whether I’m successful or not I feel the same: happy. Happy, because some time has passed, bringing me a little bit closer to clocking out. Focus on happy thoughts in-between, like going to the cottage or something.

Chapter One notes.

It's official, the first chapter is ready to go. I've made a few changes from the sample I posted last week, though the experience is, overall, the same. Enjoy. (And, yes, I'll probably provide notes between chapters like this for each subsequent chapter. Makes it easier for people to skip the stuff they don't wanna read.)

Chapter One sample.

The full chapter should be up in a week. I'll delete this snippet when that gets posted. Enjoy!

I’ve spent a lot of time, lately, feeling sorry for other people.

I’m not sure why. I never used to care so much. You wouldn’t blame me if you were in my position, either: I work the IT desk at a college. I have to deal with whiny assholes constantly, seldom receiving any thanks or praise for my work. As part of the customer service industry, I’ve learned to tune out the feelings of others and just focus on the job.

But now… now I can’t help but care. My heart is bursting with emotion for everyone. What the hell happened to me?

Take Tuesday, horrible, humdrum Tuesday. Some preachy Philosophy student had dropped his laptop on my support desk and demanded I fix the thing. Nothing new, that – I have to coax dozens of laptops back to life every day. Whether I’m successful or not I feel the same: happy. Happy, because some time has passed, bringing me a little bit closer to clocking out.

Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of gore!

Howdy, folks. This here blog's an experiment to see if online fiction can really, truly succeed. It's not so much a blog as the staging point for a small novella I'm concocting, one that I'll be posting in segments over the next couple months.

What's it about, you ask? Well, duh. Zombies. What else?

It's not one of your run-of-the-mill undead hunting stories, however. No, this one's taken from the perspective of a zombie - and he's got big ambitions for such a ghoulish creature. Be prepared for a weird, philosophical journey into the mind of the creeping dead, one peppered with thoughtful discourse (I hope it's thoughtful, anyway), dark humour and lots of blood.

This tale isn't as gross as some zombies tales you've probably read. That said, it might be a good idea to keep little kiddies away from this site. There's some vulgar language and sexual references beyond the usual dismembering. If you've ever watched an HBO show you'll be fine with The Dead Man's Burden.

I'm not done writing the thing just yet, so I'll post a sample of the first chapter to whet your appetite. Bookmark this page, keep your eyes open for updates (I'll flag 'em on Twitter, if you'd be so kind to offer me a follow - you'll get heaping helpings from my other blog as well) and enjoy!

- Matt Bird

PS. This layout is temporary, I swear. It's just easy to read.

Want to link to The Dead Man's Burden? Here's an image you can use. (In all honesty this is more so I can stick a promo in forum signatures that don't allow uploading, but if you wanna use it, go right ahead.)
